Support Local Maryland Farmers

Back in September of 2011 we did a post reminding everyone living in Frederick County and western Maryland to support their local farmers by buying local and by visiting local farmers markets. McCutcheon’s is proud to be in business with many of these farmers in Maryland and the surrounding states.  Supporting small family businesses and encouraging them to grow drives us to produce great products all year long. It is because of them that we are here today. So, if you can, we ask that you do your part as well.

Western Maryland is full of great farm stands, markets, and CSA (sharecropping) programs that can help you bring produce grown by your friends and neighbors to your kitchen. Now that spring is officially underway and seedlings are being put in the ground it’s time to start visiting those seasonal markets and shops. Or to get the produce that is already available early in the season.

This year the first glut of produce has come a little early to our area. Most of us were taken aback by the 80 degree days in March. But that warm weather has only promised more produce a little earlier this year. So, this late April/early May look for these fresh Maryland-grown veggies: Arugula, Asparagus, Swiss Chard, Fava Beans, Fiddle Head Ferns, Green Onions/Scallions, herbs, Lettuce, Parsnips, and Radishes.

Local farmers in your area can offer you delicious produce at low cost. Be a good neighbor: buy local and support your local farms. To find a farm stand in your area visit localharvest.org or discoverfrederickmd.com. They will provide you with a list of local farms, farm markets, CSA operations, and much more.

If you are our neighbor in Frederick, MD, check out these markets for great fresh produce and much more:
